A brief overview of Puerto Rican History and four lesson plans:

Strategies

  1. The Contributions of Latin American Culture in the United States. aim—To have students become aware of the influence of Hispanic culture in their everyday lives.

  2. The Histories of Puerto Rico and Cuba. aim—To have students acquire an historical knowledge of two Caribbean neighbors— Puerto Rico and Cuba.

  3. Writers and Their Times. aim—To have students become familiar with four significant native writers and how they related in historical perspective.

Lesson Plans

  1. Lesson Plan #1Objectives  Students will develop reading, retention, analyzation skills. Students will develop first hand knowledge of the life of a Cuban slave.

  2. Lesson Plan #2 Objectives  Students will become familiar with the writings of José Mart’. Students will develop discussion, reading, historical prospective skills.

  3. Lesson Plan #3 Students will become familiar with early migrant hardships. Students will become aware of importance of cigar workers in the Antillean independence movement.

  4. Lesson Plan #4 Students will be given brief biography of Rosario Ferré. Objectives  Students will analyze a Latin American short story in historical/social/economic perspective.

THE VEJIGANTE: Creature of Culture http://www.cantaremusic.com/docs/vejigante.pdf   

Level: Grades 4-5    Subject: Social Studies, History
OVERVIEW This unit uses the character of the Vejigante to explore the ways in which Spanish, African, and Caribbean cultures have combined to form Puerto Rican culture. This melding of diverse traditions is a microcosm of the ways in which societies adapt to outside change by absorbing new influences and reformulating old rituals to retain their cultural identity.

STUDENT OBJECTIVES

1. Learn about the history of the Vejigante character.

2. Be able to distinguish between the three different interpretations of carnival in Puerto Rico and cite their influences.

3. Discuss the influences of other cultures on their own culture.

4. Make the papier-mâché mask the Ponce Vejigante wears.

5. Learn about the music and dance associated with the festivals.

6. Hold their own carnival celebration.

TIME NEEDED: Six 45-minute sessions (This unit could be done in conjunction with the art teacher who would conduct Parts III -V.)
