Math |
The fifth grade math curriculum covers a variety of topics. We generally begin with a review of number sense and basic operations (place value, addition, subtraction) and then begin working on multiplication and long division. We also work with fractions and do measurement, graphing, and geometry. ***Students should be practicing their multiplication and division facts for success in all math areas.*** |

Reading |
We read a variety of novels throughout the year. Novels are often read aloud for the whole class by the teacher or using book on tape. Students are given comprehension activities and will complete book reports throughout the year. 5th Grade Book List We are also developing vocabulary through the use of our vocabulary text. Quizzes occur every other Friday. |

Writing and English |
Fifth grade focuses on writing for a variety of purposes, including descriptive and persuasive paragraphs, expository writing (the 5-paragraph essay!), journal writing as a form of self-expression, and poetry. Adding detail and description is stressed in order to make writing more complete. In addition, our class develop writing mechanics in order to become more fluent, proper writers. Daily Oral Language serves as a means to edit errors found in print. We will study the grammar using an English text. |

|
Spelling |
There will be a spelling list each week from our spelling book. High frequency words will also be reviewed. We practice the words in school each day of the week, writing the words and spelling them out loud. Spelling tests occur on Fridays. |

Science |
The fifth grade science curriculum is now aligned with the new state CMT guidelines. In fifth grade we cover Light and Sound and the motions of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. Both of these topics are challenging, and we use as many hands-on experiences as possible to teach the students. |

Social Studies |
Fifth grade social studies curriculum focuses on the geography of the Western Hemisphere and exploration related to this area. Students will study North and South American countries, including their location on the map, climate, culture, and resources. |
