Homework

Homework is an important part of fifth grade.  Homework will be given each weeknight except for Friday, although weekend homework may be assigned occasionally.  Students should be spending 50-60 minutes per night on homework.  Assignments are designed to provide practice and extension for lessons we have completed that day.  This helps students retain the information and provides a chance for students to try the concepts on their own.  All students are expected to fully complete each assignment before handing it in.  Homework is due in the next morning unless another deadline is given.  If a student is struggling with an answer or section, I would appreciate a note or an initial on the assignment from the parent letting me know about the trouble and saving the student from an incomplete.

Cursive

Fifth graders are expected to write in cursive on all their papers and assignments.  Students will be required to use cursive starting in October.

Book Club

Each month Mrs. Skelton will send home order forms for the Scholastic Book Clubs with the entire fifth grade.  Scholastic offers terrific deals on many different kinds of books, homework aids, software, etc.  The order forms range in ages in order to account for individual reading needs and preferences.  Book clubs are a great way to put books into students’ hands.  If you decide to order during any month, checks are preferred but cash is accepted.  Please make checks out to Scholastic Book Clubs.  If you order from more than one form, you may write one check for the entire total.  Please return all orders to Mrs. Skelton.

Birthdays

Throughout the year, students who wish to celebrate their birthday by bringing in a snack or treat for the class are certainly welcome to.  If possible, please provide any serving ware/utensils necessary.  Thank you!

Morning Routine

Mornings are one of the busiest times of the day at PCS.  We ask for the following procedures to be followed:

1)     If you wish to purchase breakfast once school is open, please bring your food to the room to eat so you can start your morning work.

2)     Notes for the bus or pickup need to be signed in the office.  Please let us see the note before you go so we stay informed.

3)     Lunch needs to be ordered and homework needs to be handed in before you leave the room on an errand!

4)  Empty your backpack of everything you need for the day!

5)     If you need to find a friend, a teacher, or make a run to the library, now is the time.  Please don’t ask in the middle of the day.

6)     Go to the bathroom!

7)     All students MUST be in the classroom when the bell rings at 8:40 .

8)     Students should be in their seats, quiet, and working when the bell rings.

 Behavior

In fifth grade, we focus on personal responsibility and respect.  Students are in charge of the decisions they make and of their actions.  Homework must be completed, class rules need to be followed, and 100% effort is expected at all times!
