Class News
Our science center is now set up with many different kinds of magnets. We have been reading about what magnets can do and also doing some experiments with magnets. Some students have brought in magnets from home and shared them with the class. They are having lots of fun with magnets.
WINTER WEATHER Please remember to have your child wear hats and mittens to school and a nice warm winter coat that they can zip up all by themselves. Children need to have boots on if they are going to be walking in the snow. Without boots they have to stay on the hardtop. Don't forget...........work on your shoe tying skills!
READING AND MATH WORKSHOP We have learned a new game in reading workshop. The bag game. A word is pulled out of the bag and they must be able to either say it, give a sentence, tell how many sounds they hear, spell it or read a nonsense/silly word. Each bag has points and if they give the correct answer they get the points on the bag. The children love the game. For our nonsense/silly words we want them to sound out each letter in the word quietly to themselves and then tell us the word. Here are some to try at home (remember our nonsense words have a short vowel sound in the beginning or middle). min nej piv fuv nav piv lav kiz sij wim ob sut muk
In math workshop we are learning how to skip count by 2s and 5s. Learning what a five frame is and counting on. Example, 5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 . We are also practicing couting up to 100. We will be celebrating the 100th day in about 13 days, if we don't have any snow days. Please practice oral counting with your child, see how high they can count in a minute (and keep track to see if they improve). Our January goal is 58 in one minute.
Today we enjoyed a play put on by Mrs. Hulme's 6th grade class about the female Pharaoh of Egypt. The children really enjoyed it.
