Math
Mathematicians
at work:
Third grade mathematicians start the year with a focus on reading and creating graphs.
They also work on reviewing and memorizing addition sums to 20. Strong knowledge
of basic facts is an asset as we move on to addition with regrouping.
Third graders will also focus on place value and time. Students will
practice expressing numbers in expanded form, base ten blocks, standard form,
and in words. Rounding and estimating will also be studied. Students
will work on telling time in five minute intervals and words (quarter past, half
past, quarter of). Elapsed time problems will also be
addressed.
The concepts of multiple digit addition and money will also be addressed.
Students will have the opportunity to practice with authentic application of
these skills. Students will work with counting coins, making change, and
estimating sums.
Third graders will be introduced to multiplication concepts. We will use
pictorial arrays to represent and solve multiplication facts. Students
will also be expected to practice and memorize the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10
times tables. In conjunction with multiplication, students will be
introduced to division concepts and beginning strategies.
Students will also begin subtraction with regrouping. They will use base
ten blocks to reinforce the concept. Students will work up to three and
four digit subtraction with regrouping.
Throughout the year, students will work on applying their skills to problem
solving and expressing their mathematical thinking. Students will
work on writing and solving story problems.
