Number Line

Numbers can be a ton of fun for children.  Put them on a line with some pictures and a story and you can have more fun than you know what to do with.  Your child will be bringing home their own number line activity packet in the beginning of school, but if you need another I have a plethora of back-ups available.  Here is the  number line we use in our meetings.

Adding

First look at the problem.
It's adding so draw lines to represent the numbers.
Count up the lines drawing a mark on the top to make sure you count them all once.
Write the answer.

Subtracting

First look at the problem.
It's subtracting so draw circles to represent the first number.
Cross out the number you're taking away and count how many are left.
Write the answer.

Graphs

We use graphs to show and represent information.  From a graph we can tell things that are greater than , less than, the most, the least, and equal to other things.  We use horizontal and vertical graphs to record and examine information.

We also use graphs to create information like the graph below.  In this graph, the children would draw the shapes that correspond to the graph.

Greater Than, Less Than Game

We use these really neat bug jar cards that were left in the room for me when I first came to PCS to play a game called Greater Than, Less Than.  (You can play this game at home with a regular deck of playing cards if you remove the face cards.)  We stack the bug jars up so only one is visible.  The children take turns guessing if the next bug jar will hold a number of bugs that is greater than or less than the one that is showing. If they are correct the children keep the bug jar card, but if they are not the teachers keep the it.  (The last card showing and the last hidden card go to the same team as a pair.) The team with the most bug jars wins.
