Homework is an integral part of the learning process. The faculty recognizes that it is a necessary reinforcement to classroom instruction as well as a means by which independent study skills and intellectual curiosity can be fostered at home. - Pomfret Community School Student Handbook
Final Copy Quality Requirements for Grades 7 and 8
The 8th Grade Team recognizes this and that students also have a myriad of extra-curricular activities. The recommended amount of homework for a 8th Grader is between 70 and 90 minutes. All students receive an assignment notebook "planner" on the first day of school. It is the student's responsibility to record their homework assignments when time is given and to make up any missed assignments. In addition, all assignments are posted in classrooms.
"Daily Review is the Key to Success"
The following are some general rules regarding homework/assignments for the classes that I teach.
MATH - Math homework is assigned in the 8th Grade on an almost nightly basis. Again, the purpose is to review and practice new concepts and reinforce basic skills to promote general learning.
For my Math class, we are currently using the Prentice Hall textbook Pre-Algebra. I expect students to complete assignments on time, neatly and to show all work. Quizzes are held regularly and students should be prepared for a quiz on new material daily - you never know when there may be a quiz!
ENGLISH - assignments are given on a regular basis and written responses are often required. Assignments are usually a combination of writing, vocabulary, grammar, Daily Oral language activities and other relevant topics. Completion of assignments is critical and PARTICIPATION IS A MUST in class!
SOCIAL STUDIES - Assignments (reading and response questions/assignments) are given on a regular basis. The purpose of most of these assignments is to prepare students for classroom activities and discussion. Other reading pieces may be given for background information or enrichment. Reading assignments are expected to be done on time. It is important that students review and re-read materials so they are prepared for class discussion. In social studies classes - you MUST be prepared to participate
