Welcome to First Grade

Mrs. Bars Mrs. Kendall Mrs. Clarke
Foundation Your child is in the process of acquiring their foundation upon which future learning will build. The goal is to have the foundation be as stable and broad as possible so they'll have the proper support as subjects become harder.
Independence Going to lunch, tying their shoes, problem solving, having an, "I can do it." Instead of an "I can't do it." attitude and making choices based on good decisions are all part of this first grade year.
Responsibility This goes right along with independence. They'll begin to understand the importance of taking responsibility for their own attitudes and actions.
Social skills This is such an important area. Manners, compassion, solving conflicts appropriately...basically how to get along with everyone else.
Transitions This is a HUGE part of first grade. Your child will have tremendous growth this year. They literally will change from the "little kids" of kindergarten to the "big kids" of second grade right before your eyes.

Dolch Sight Word Practice http://www.netrover.com/~kingskid/sightword/dolchgames.htm
50 to 75 percent of all words
in text material are common words which are repeated. These 220 words are called
the Dolch Sight Words. Because these words are used to hold thoughts together,
these words must be recognized at glance before a child can read with
confidence.
